Fresh analysis indicates that patients who discontinue blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional diet and exercise plans.
Findings released in a major health publication demonstrates that while obese people often shed about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals using these medications must be cognizant of the risk of quick weight regain when the therapy concludes," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain implies a return to pre-treatment mass in about one and a half years.
Comparing Approaches
The study, which looked at dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
Researchers point out that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically see a more gradual creep back—around 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
The Reason for the Quick Regain
Nutrition scientists propose the way of the jabs is key to understanding the heightened weight return.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also diminish sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Withdrawal of this medication means appetite is uncontrolled, making overeating far more likely."
A Lifelong Condition?
Health authorities advise the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts argue that, considering the significant potential of relapse, the therapy should be considered life-long.
This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "underscore the persistent character of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.
Patient Experiences
Individuals who have stopped the jabs report a intense resurgence of hunger.
"It was like something that goes on and you're instantly starving," described one woman.
This challenge is worsened if individuals have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Growing Use
Figures show that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.
- Adoption is more common among women compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Finally, clinicians stress that while the jabs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and lasting health benefits likely depends on ongoing lifestyle management.
