RAF Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a combined operation against an hidden munitions depot in Syria employed by the Islamic State group (IS), according to the British defence ministry.

The facility, identified by reconnaissance, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was positioned in mountains just to the north of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a series of approach shafts leading to the site... preliminary assessments are that the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the strike conducted Saturday night and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - imposed extremist governance over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This strike shows British leadership, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to eliminate any revival of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," Britain's Defence Chief the minister remarked.

British military aircraft have performed patrols over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted comeback" of the group following its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I must thank every member of the UK armed forces who took part in this mission for their professionalism and their valour," Healey added. "They were part of numerous British personnel deployed over Christmas and New Year. This action, to take out dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our way of life, demonstrates how our armed forces are prepared to act, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security domestically and powerful internationally."

During December, the American forces executed what it described as a "massive strike" targeting IS targets in the country, subsequent to an ambush resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations says Daesh still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in Iraq and Syria.
